ukraine

UK/juːˈkɹeɪn/US/juːˈkɹeɪn/
nounA2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #9,808 of 15,258mostly written

Ukraine is the large European country of Kyiv, with fields of sunflowers and wheat. Travel to Ukraine, from Ukraine, the east of Ukraine.

It is the largest country entirely within Europe and sits on some of the most fertile soil in the world, the black earth that made it a major grain exporter. Note that English usage settled on Ukraine without the definite article after 1991, and on Kyiv rather than Kiev, both following Ukrainian preference.

Ukraine Borrowed from Polish Ukraina. Polish Ukraina or Russian Украи́на, from orv оукраина, which is most commonly taken to have meant "borderland, march" in this context, though for about a century now Ukrainian scholars have articulated an alternative theory that it meant "region, country, the land around (a given center)" in this context instead.
