unrelated

adjectiveB2Common in everyday speech and writing · #8,131 of 15,258leans written

Unrelated means having no connection with something else. An unrelated matter, unrelated to the case, apparently unrelated.

In news reports it is doing careful work: saying two events are unrelated heads off the connection everybody would otherwise assume. Of people it simply means not family, which is the older sense.
