uptight

UK/ʌpˈtaɪt/US/ʌpˈtaɪt/
adjectiveB2Common in everyday speech and writing · #4,136 of 15,258mostly spoken

Uptight means tense and unable to relax. Get uptight, so uptight, uptight about it.

It describes both a moment and a disposition, and it is always slightly critical — telling somebody not to be so uptight is rarely well received. It suits people who mind about rules and tidiness. The word is American and came out of the 1960s, where it briefly meant the opposite — excellent — before settling into its current sense. Note that loosen up is the standard advice offered to the uptight.
