Velcro is a fastening of tiny hooks catching a looped surface. Velcro straps, fasten the Velcro, the rip of Velcro.

The inventor got the idea from burrs stuck to his dog after a walk, looked at one under a microscope and copied it — which makes it the most famous case of an invention taken straight from nature. It is a trademark, so the generic term is hook and loop.
