vigilance

UK/ˈvɪd͡ʒɪlɪns/US/ˈvɪd͡ʒɪlɪns/
nounC1Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #10,588 of 15,258neutral

Vigilance is careful watchfulness for danger. Constant vigilance, relax your vigilance, vigilance is required.

It is sustained rather than momentary, and the difficulty is that human attention degrades badly on long watches — the vigilance decrement is a measured effect and the reason security screening rotates staff. A vigilante takes enforcement into their own hands, from the same root. Note that the Latin means being awake.
