walkout

nounB2+2 meaningsCommon in everyday speech and writing · #6,281 of 15,258leans written

Other forms: walkouts

A walkout is leaving work suddenly as a protest. Stage a walkout, a mass walkout, the walkout began.

It is unplanned or short where a strike is organised and balloted, which is why the two words are not interchangeable in British industrial relations — an unballoted walkout has no legal protection. It also means leaving a meeting or a chamber as a protest, which is a common parliamentary gesture. Note walk out as the verb, two words.
