warehousing

nounB2+Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #14,609 of 15,258mostly written

Warehousing is the storing of goods until they are wanted. Warehousing costs, a warehousing contract, warehousing and distribution.

It is a real cost rather than a pause, since space, heat and handling all have to be paid for, which is what just-in-time delivery exists to avoid. The figurative use is grim and means holding people somewhere without helping them.
