wind

UK/ˈwɪnd/US/ˈwɪnd/
nounA2Very common — you will meet it every day · #673 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: winds

Wind is moving air that you feel on your face and that shakes the trees. A strong wind, the wind dropped, wind speed.

It is named by where it comes from: a north wind blows from the north. Wind speed is measured in knots or miles per hour, and the Beaufort scale grades it from calm to hurricane. Wind power now generates a large share of British electricity. Note that the verb wind, meaning to turn or coil, rhymes with find and is a different word; and get wind of something, meaning to hear a rumour.
