wisteria

US/wɪsˈtɛriə/
nounC1Common in everyday speech and writing · #6,498 of 15,258neutral

Wisteria is a climbing plant that hangs down in long purple chains. A wisteria in flower, train the wisteria, wisteria over the porch.

It is enormously strong and long-lived, and an old one can pull down a gutter or lift roof tiles if it is not cut back hard twice a year. It flowers on old wood, so pruning at the wrong time removes the whole display.
