woodwork

UK/ˈwʊdˌwɜːk/US/ˈwʊdˌwɝk/
nounB2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #8,977 of 15,258leans written

Woodwork is the craft of making things from timber. Study woodwork, good woodwork, the woodwork was rotten.

Wood moves with humidity across the grain and hardly at all along it, and every joint in traditional woodwork is designed around that fact. The word also means the wooden parts of a building, and coming out of the woodwork means appearing unexpectedly.
