workbench

US/ˈwɝk.bɛnt͡ʃ/
nounB2Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #12,971 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: workbenches

A workbench is the sturdy table a maker works on. Thick top, a vice at one end, and tools within reach.

The weight is the point, since a bench that moves when you plane something is useless. Woodworkers, mechanics and electricians all have one, fitted out differently. The word is one word. Computing borrowed it for software that gathers tools in one place, and a workbench in that sense is an environment rather than a table. Every workshop has one and none of them is ever tidy.
