workplace

US/ˈwɝkˌpleɪs/
nounB2Common in everyday speech and writing · #5,404 of 15,258leans written

Other forms: workplaces

The workplace is wherever somebody does their job. An office, a factory floor, a van, a kitchen table.

The word matters because it is the unit that law applies to, so workplace safety, workplace pensions and workplace bullying are all defined categories. Employers have duties to everybody in one. Its usefulness is that it is neutral about the kind of work, which office or factory would not be. The phrase in the workplace covers whole social questions, as in equality in the workplace.
