zebra crossing

UK/ˈzɛbɹə ˌkɹɔsɪŋ/
nounB1Not compared — the two pools are counted one word at a time, so a phrase has no score

A zebra crossing is the striped place where walkers cross a road. Use the zebra crossing.

Traffic must stop once somebody has stepped onto it, which is what makes it different from other markings. The name was suggested by a British politician in 1948 and stuck immediately.
