Approachable means easy to walk up to and talk with. An approachable teacher, seem approachable, less approachable than he looks.
It is one of the most useful things a person in authority can be, and it is mostly built out of small signals — an open door, a name used, a question answered without impatience. Of a subject, approachable means not needing prior knowledge.

From approach + -able. approach comes from Middle English aprochen, borrowed from Old French aprochier (modern French approcher), from Latin appropio, a verb based on Latin prope (“near”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European pro- (a variant of per- (“before, in front; first”)) + -kʷe (“suffix forming distributives from interrogatives”)).
