Other forms: canyons
A canyon is a deep narrow valley with steep rock walls, cut by a river over ages. The Grand Canyon, down the canyon, a slot canyon.
It forms where a river cuts down faster than the sides erode, which needs dry country and hard rock — which is why they are a feature of arid landscapes. A slot canyon is narrow enough to touch both walls and dangerous in rain. Note that the word came from Spanish and means a tube.
