chad

UK/t͡ʃæd/US/t͡ʃæd/
nounB2Common in everyday speech and writing · #2,985 of 15,258neutral

Chad is a landlocked country in north-central Africa, named after Lake Chad. In Chad, the capital of Chad, northern Chad.

It is always capitalised. Much of the north is Sahara desert and the south is savannah, and the country is one of the largest in Africa by area. Lake Chad, which gives it its name, has shrunk dramatically since the 1960s — by most estimates to a small fraction of its former size — which has made it a standard example in writing about climate and water. The capital is N'Djamena and the official languages are French and Arabic.

Where it comes from

Built from

  • chat · English — louse

+ (paper) Uncertain; possibly from the English slang term chat (“louse”). The word predates the chadless punch, which therefore cannot be its origin, and a derivation from Scots chad (“river gravel”) stated in some dictionaries is now thought to be nothing more than guesswork.
