chute

UK/ʃuːt/US/ʃut/
nounB2Common in everyday speech and writing · #4,354 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: chutes

A chute is a sloping channel that things slide down. A laundry chute, a rubbish chute, down the chute.

Blocks of flats had rubbish chutes; hospitals and hotels have laundry chutes; and grain, coal and post all move by chute. In a playground, a chute is the slide. Chute is also short for parachute. Note that chute and shoot sound identical, and that in some regions a water chute at a fairground is spelled either way, which nobody has ever resolved.
