Other forms: corresponding, corresponds, corresponded
To correspond is to match up with something, or to exchange letters. Correspond to the figures, correspond with him, corresponding entry.
The matching sense takes to or with: the numbers correspond to the invoice. The letter-writing sense is now slightly formal, though it covers email as readily. In accounting and data work, corresponding entries are the ones that should agree, and finding that they do not is the whole of reconciliation. Note correspondence, correspondent; and that the Latin means to answer together.
1verbmatchTo match up with something.

correspond is a matching or writing.
Latin correspondere is com plus respondere, to answer. Respond, response and spouse come from the same answering, since a spouse was one who promised in return.
