decanter

UK/dɪˈkæntə(ɹ)/

Other forms: decanters

A decanter is a glass bottle wine is poured into to breathe. A crystal decanter, use a decanter, fill the decanter.

It does two things: separates a wine from the sediment an old bottle throws, and exposes a young one to air, which softens it. Which of the two is wanted decides how long it should stand. Note decant, and that a decanter is for serving where a carafe is plainer.
