disability

UK/dɪsəˈbɪlɪti/US/dɪsəˈbɪlɪti/
nounB2Common in everyday speech and writing · #5,946 of 15,258leans written

Other forms: disabilities

A disability is a condition that limits what somebody can do. A physical disability, a learning disability, living with a disability.

The social model of disability holds that people are disabled by barriers in the environment rather than by their conditions — steps rather than legs — and it underpins accessibility law. Disabled person and person with a disability are both used, and different communities prefer different ones, which is worth asking rather than assuming. Note disability benefit; and that handicapped is dated and generally avoided.
