god

UK/ɡɒd/US/ɡɑd/
nounA1One of the most common words in English · #40 of 15,258leans spoken

Other forms: gods

A god is a being worshipped as having power over nature and people. The gods of Olympus, a river god, believe in God.

Capitalised and without an article it names the single deity of the monotheistic religions; lowercase and countable it names one of many. Most of the world's religions through history have had many. Note that god is Germanic and unrelated to good, despite the resemblance, and that goddess is formed with the usual ending.
