Other forms: historians
A historian is a person who studies and writes about the past. A military historian, historians disagree, ask a historian.
The work is mostly with sources rather than with facts — deciding what a document can be trusted to show is the discipline, and two historians with the same papers can honestly disagree. A historian has to ask which sources survived and why.
