Immigration is the process of coming into a country to live, or the desk that checks you in. Go through immigration, immigration policy, an immigration officer.

At an airport, immigration checks who you are and whether you may enter, and customs checks what you are carrying — two different desks with two different jobs. Immigration is movement in; emigration is movement out, and the same person is both.
