indefinitely

UK/ɪnˈdɛfɪnɪtli/US/ɪnˈdɛfɪnɪtli/
adverbC1Common in everyday speech and writing · #5,462 of 15,258leans written

Indefinitely means for a period with no set end. Postponed indefinitely, detained indefinitely, closed indefinitely.

It is not the same as permanently: indefinitely leaves the end open rather than ruling it out, though in practice the two often amount to the same thing. Indefinite detention, holding somebody without a fixed term, is the gravest use of the word.
