informality

nounB2+Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #13,498 of 15,258neutral

Informality is a relaxed manner with the formal rules set aside. Studied informality, the informality of the meeting, welcome informality.

It is often a choice rather than an absence — an informal meeting has rules of its own, and knowing them is harder for an outsider than following written ones. That is the hidden cost of informality in workplaces: it favours those already inside.
