jigsaw

UK/ˈd͡ʒɪɡ.sɔː/US/ˈd͡ʒɪɡ.sɔ/
nounB2Common in everyday speech and writing · #6,176 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: jigsaws

A jigsaw is a power saw whose blade jumps up and down for curved cuts. Use a jigsaw, a cordless jigsaw, cut it with the jigsaw.

The blade cuts on the upstroke, which is why the good face of the board should go downwards to keep the tearing out of sight. The puzzle takes its name from the tool, because the first ones were cut on a saw of this kind.
