microphone

UK/ˈmaɪ.kɹəˌfəʊn/US/ˈmaɪ.kɹəˌfoʊn/
nounB2Common in everyday speech and writing · #3,895 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: microphones

A microphone is the device that catches sound so it can be recorded or amplified. Speak into the microphone, a wireless microphone, the microphone is not on.

The everyday short form is mic, pronounced mike, and spelled either way — mic is now standard, though it looks as if it should rhyme with pick. Common phrases include mic drop, meaning a devastating final remark, and hot mic, meaning one that is live when the speaker thinks it is not, which has ended several political careers. Note lapel mic, boom mic and the verb mic up.

Where it comes from

Greek mikros, small, plus phone, sound or voice — an instrument for small sounds. It was coined in the seventeenth century for a hearing aid and reused for the electrical device two hundred years later, which is why the name describes amplification rather than recording.

From micro + phone.
