xylophone

UK/ˈzaɪ.ləˌfəʊn/US/ˈzaɪləˌfoʊn/
nounB2Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #13,168 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: xylophones

A xylophone is a set of tuned wooden bars struck with small hammers. Play the xylophone, a toy xylophone, the xylophone part.

The bars are wood, which is what the name says and what separates it from the metal-barred glockenspiel and the deeper marimba. The tubes underneath are resonators tuned to the bar above, and removing them makes the note die almost at once.
