Other forms: mitts
A mitt is a thick padded glove with no separate fingers. The one you grab to pull a hot tray out of the oven.
Two mitts dominate. The oven mitt sits by every cooker, though in Britain the job is often done by an oven glove or a folded tea towel. The baseball mitt is the deep leather glove a fielder catches in, and American writing uses it constantly. Mitt is also a mild slang word for a hand — get your mitts off that — which is where you meet it in dialogue. Behind all three sits mitten, the winter version with one pocket for the fingers and one for the thumb.
a clipping of mitten.
