mortified

UK/ˈmɔːtɪˌfaɪd/US/ˈmɔɹtəˌfaɪd/
adjectiveC1Common in everyday speech and writing · #8,321 of 15,258leans spoken

Mortified means deeply and painfully embarrassed. Absolutely mortified, mortified by it, she was mortified.

It is at the top of the embarrassment range — mortified is wishing the floor would open — and it is nearly always about your own behaviour rather than somebody else's. The word is grim underneath: it comes from the Latin for killing, and in medicine mortified flesh is dead flesh.
