Other forms: municipalities
A municipality is a town or district with its own government. The local municipality, municipality boundaries, run by the municipality.
The word is standard across most of the world and rare in Britain, which uses council instead — a difference that catches out translators constantly. What a municipality controls varies enormously by country. Note that the Latin municipium was a free town, from a word meaning duty.
