Other forms: novelists
A novelist is somebody who writes novels. A young novelist, the novelist's third book, work as a novelist.
Very few make a living from it alone, and most teach, review or do something else entirely. The form is only about three centuries old in English, so a novelist is a much newer thing than a poet or a playwright.
