Other forms: nutrients

A nutrient is a substance in food that the body needs to grow. Essential nutrients, nutrient content, rich in nutrients.

They divide into macronutrients — protein, fat, carbohydrate — and micronutrients, the vitamins and minerals needed in tiny amounts. Essential means the body cannot make it and must be given it. In farming, nutrient runoff into rivers causes algal blooms. Note nutrition; and that the Latin means nourishing.
