originality

UK/əˌɹɪd͡ʒɪˈnælɪti/US/əˌɹɪd͡ʒɪˈnælɪti/
nounB2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #10,086 of 15,258leans written

Originality is the quality of being genuinely new. Real originality, a lack of originality, prize originality.

It is prized in art and in research and is harder to establish than to claim, since almost everything has a precursor once somebody looks. In academic work, originality is a formal requirement for a doctorate and is defined narrowly — a small genuinely new contribution rather than a revolution. Note original; and that the Latin means belonging to the beginning.
