Other forms: paramedics
A paramedic is the trained emergency worker who reaches you long before a hospital does. Kneeling on the pavement with a bag open, taking a pulse, deciding in under a minute what has to happen first.
Paramedics work from ambulances and air ambulances, and they treat you where you are — at the roadside, in the kitchen, on the pitch — not in a ward. They are not doctors and not nurses; the para- is the same one as in paralegal and paramilitary, marking a trained professional working alongside the main profession. Related jobs go by other names, so an ambulance crew may include an emergency medical technician as well as a paramedic. In everyday speech you say "call an ambulance", and the person who climbs out of it is a paramedic.
