Other forms: pennants
A pennant is a long narrow flag, often tapering to a point. Fly a pennant, a racing pennant, string of pennants.
At sea a pennant is flown from the masthead of a commissioned warship, and in signalling different pennants carry different meanings. Strings of small triangular pennants are called bunting. In American sport, the pennant is the flag awarded to a league champion, so winning the pennant means winning the league. Note that the word comes from the Latin for a feather.
