positioning

UK/pəˈzɪʃənɪŋ/US/pəˈzɪʃənɪŋ/
nounC1Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #8,949 of 15,258leans written

Positioning is the place a brand aims to hold in people's minds. Brand positioning, positioning statement, reposition the product.

The insight behind it is that the contest is for a place in memory rather than for a place on a shelf — being the cheap one or the safe one is a position, and holding two is usually impossible. The idea was named by Ries and Trout in 1972. Note position, from the Latin for placing.
