rescind

UK/ɹɪˈsɪnd/US/ɹɪˈsɪnd/
verbC1Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #10,449 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: rescinded, rescinding, rescinds

To rescind is to cancel an order or a decision officially. Rescind the offer, the order was rescinded, rescind the invitation.

It cancels as though the thing had never been made rather than merely ending it, which is why a rescinded job offer leaves nothing behind. It is formal and belongs to organisations rather than to people. The Latin means to cut back.
