Other forms: restaurants
A restaurant is a place where you sit at a table, order food and pay after eating. A good restaurant, book a restaurant, the restaurant is full.
The paying afterwards and the table service are what separate it from a café or a takeaway. The first places called restaurants opened in Paris in the eighteenth century and sold restorative broths, which is where the name comes from — the word describes the soup, not the room. Note restaurateur, which has no n in it despite the restaurant it runs, because it comes straight from the French.
