segregation

UK/sɛɡɹəˈɡeɪ̯ʃən/US/sɛɡɹəˈɡeɪ̯ʃən/
nounB2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #8,963 of 15,258leans written

Segregation is keeping groups of people forcibly apart. Racial segregation, end segregation, segregation laws.

Legal segregation in the American South and under apartheid in South Africa was enforced by law until the second half of the twentieth century. Segregation can also happen without law, through housing and schooling, and that kind has proved harder to end.
