self-esteem

UK/ˌsɛlf.əˈstiːm/US/ˌsɛlf.əˈstiːm/
nounB2neutral

Self-esteem is how much you value and believe in yourself. Low self-esteem, boost self-esteem, damage her self-esteem.

The programmes that tried to raise it in schools mostly failed, and the finding that survives is that it follows achievement rather than causing it — praise without grounds does not stick. Low self-esteem is a real and treatable part of several conditions.
