skating

UK/ˈskeɪtɪŋ/US/ˈskeɪtɪŋ/
nounA2+Common in everyday speech and writing · #3,755 of 15,258leans written

Skating is gliding across ice on boots with thin metal blades. Go skating, figure skating, skating on the pond.

The blade is hollow-ground so it rides on two edges rather than a flat, and steering is done by leaning onto one of them. Skating on thin ice means taking a risk. Ice thickness for safety is measured in inches and guessed at everybody's peril.
