Sodium is a soft reactive metal, half of common salt. Sodium chloride, low in sodium, sodium metal.
On its own it is so reactive that it catches fire in water and must be stored under oil, yet joined to chlorine it is table salt. Nutrition labels give sodium rather than salt, and salt is about two and a half times the sodium figure. Its symbol Na comes from natrium.
