Your stepfather is your mother's husband who is not your birth father. My stepfather, a good stepfather, stepfather and stepchildren.
The whole family works the same way: stepmother, stepson, stepdaughter, stepbrother, stepsister. A stepfather has no automatic legal parental responsibility in Britain unless he acquires it. Stepdad is the everyday word. Note that step- has nothing to do with steps: it comes from an Old English word about bereavement, so a stepchild was originally an orphan.

Old English steop- comes from a verb meaning to bereave — a steopcild was a child who had lost a parent. The prefix named the loss before it named the replacement, which is why it attaches to child as naturally as to father.
