Other forms: subtitles

A subtitle is words at the bottom of a screen giving the speech in text. Turn on the subtitles, English subtitles, read the subtitle.

Subtitles translate or transcribe the dialogue; captions also describe the sounds, which is what deaf viewers need. A large and growing share of viewers keep them on all the time, partly because modern sound mixes bury the speech under everything else.
