A subtotal is a running total of part of a list. Check the subtotal, the subtotal before tax, add a subtotal row.

On a receipt it is the amount before tax and delivery, which is why the final figure is always higher than the one people look at. In a spreadsheet a subtotal row sums a group, and the grand total then adds those rather than the individual lines.

Perhaps related to osc touto (“community, city-state”), xum 𐌕𐌏𐌕𐌀𐌌 (“tribe”), Old English þēod (“a nation, people, tribe”), from Proto-Indo-European tewtéh₂ (“people”).
