unwittingly

UK/ʌnˈwɪtɪŋli/US/ˌʌnˈwɪtɪŋli/
adverbC1Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #11,237 of 15,258neutral

Unwittingly means without realising what you were doing. Unwittingly helped, unwittingly become part of it, quite unwittingly.

It is the word that removes blame while keeping the fact, which is why it does so much work in reporting and in law. The wit in it is the old sense meaning to know, the same one in to wit and in unwitting.
