Other forms: vetting, vets, vetted
A vet is the animal doctor. Take the cat to the vet, a vet's bill, the vet said.
The training is longer than most people assume and covers every species a client might bring in, which is several biologies at once. As a verb, to vet somebody is to check their background carefully — that sense comes from a horse being examined by a vet before sale. Note veterinary, and veteran, which is a different word.
