vibration

US/vaɪˈbɹeɪʃən/
nounB2Common in everyday speech and writing · #6,760 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: vibrations

A vibration is a rapid trembling movement passing through something. Feel the vibration, engine vibration, damp the vibration.

Unwanted vibration destroys machinery, so engineers spend a great deal of effort on damping it, and resonance is the danger: if a structure is shaken at its own natural frequency the movement grows instead of dying away.
