welding

UK/ˈwɛldɪŋ/US/ˈwɛldɪŋ/
nounB2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #10,366 of 15,258leans written

Welding is joining metal by melting the edges together. Arc welding, a welding mask, learn welding.

The join is stronger than a bolted one because the two pieces become one piece of metal rather than being held against each other. It needs a shielding gas or a flux, since molten metal exposed to air oxidises and the weld fails.
